We study the impact of socio-economic factors on the true health and thresholds in self reported health. Given the existence of various heterogeneity within self reported health, we develop a Heterogeneous Hierarchical Ordered Probit model to accommodate these types of heterogeneity, and then obtain consistent estimates of these effects. With the data in China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we find: 1) The thresholds in self reported health are significantly heterogeneous; 2) Given heterogeneous thresholds, the model without controlling for the heterogeneity can not obtain consistent estimates of the impact of SES on actual health; 3) There is significant heterogeneity among actual health; 4) There is significant heterogeneity among the process that respondents perceive the health of hypothetical individuals in vignettes. While the threshold function estimates show that male relative to female, senior citizens relative to the young, highly educated relative to the low level of education, non-patients relative to patients, those suffering from severe famine at an early age relative to who did not, are even more optimistic when evaluating their own health.
